About Rustic Shelves
Rustic furniture and fixtures are very versatile and can easily blend in with many design styles. Everything from modern rooms to minimalist homes, it all depends on the paint job and the finish. The ideal setting for rustic furniture would be an ethnic style home replete with handcrafted antiques and heirlooms in order to harness that quaint beatnik appeal. Rustic shelves are a novel way to showcase exotic candles, trinkets and other decorative items while adding style and ethnic chic to your home.
Most rustic shelves are made of wood and can be easily installed. They adorn the walls of your home in such a way that the nails cannot be seen. Be it a country home or a plush condominium, constructing a set of rustic shelves would blend perfectly with the décor of your home.
Build Rustic Shelving
In this article we have devised a set of instructions, which you could use in converting an old wooden ladder into a set of rustic shelves.

1. Begin by cutting the ladder into four equal pieces. Measure one end on each of the ladder pieces and mark a spot that is roughly about one inch from the first rung. Saw this end off from each ladder piece. This would leave a short one-inch leg below where you would attach the first shelf. Doing this would ensure that each rung is equidistant from the floor on all the four ladder pieces, while keeping the level of your rustic shelves.
2. You would want to stand two of the ladder pieces up with the short sawed ends down. Place an old board across the two bottom rungs and screw the board into the ladder rungs on each end.
3. Now place another board across the next set of ladder rungs and screw them together. Keep repeating this process until you have boards screwed across all the rungs in the ladders.
4. Drill holes in the upright parts of the ladder and fix bolts through these holes into the studs in your wall.
Decorate Your Rustic Shelves
If you want to give your set of rustic shelves a mantle like appearance here’s what you should do.
1. Simply turn your rustic shelves over and remove the board covering the back.
2. Now hold the board you had removed from the back of your rustic shelves against the wall and adjust it until it is straight.
3. Hammer nails through the board and into your wall studs or anchors, you can use either.
4. Apply a smattering of wood glue along the top of the mounting board and hoist your rustic shelf over it, with its back facing the board.
5. Now place the top of the rear end of your shelf onto the top of the board making sure that your shelf is fixed tight against the wall. Follow this process for all the rustic shelves.
6. Hammer a couple of finishing nails through the back top of your rustic shelf and into the mounting board making sure that there is one nail on either side of your shelf, and voila! Your rustic shelves are ready to be used.
